Indy-500: 19-year-old Matheus Leist rides as a veteran in the “toughest race of his career” and arrives in 13th place

  |

The youngest pilot on the Grid, Matheus Leist arrived on 13th place among 33 pilots, being the second best first-timer in a race marked by various accidents, including with experienced pilots on Indy.
Having most accidents in the last few years, Indy-500 was the place for the youngest pilot to stand out: Matheus Leist. At 19 years old, the pilot of AJ Foyt was impeccable on a day when many veterans ended up having accidents and he finished on 13th place among 33 pilots, being the second best first-timer.
“It was a hard race, maybe the most difficult of my career. To be honest, I didn’t expect it to be so complicated, due to difficulties that all of the pilots were having because of the new car (with less aerodynamic pressure). That’s why I think we did a great job, bringing the whole care home and getting a good result, close to the top 10. Of course we wanted to finish a little further ahead, and we even had potential to do so, but this is what Indy-500 is like. The level is very high and that’s why it’s the biggest race in the world” said Leist, who had the best result among the Brazilian pilots after the leaving of Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves.
“There were many accidents, some right in front of me. There were moments when I hit the breaks at the right time to avoid a crash, so this race was really on the edge the whole time. And Indianapolis is like this: when it’s supposed to be your day, it is” Said Leist, who was the English F-3 champion of 2016, title also accomplished by worldwide champions like Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna.
After getting this title, in 2017 Leist went to the USA where he debuted in the ovals, in Indianapolis and in Freedom 100, race which he won and ended up helping open the doors for the main category change in 2018.
“I can say I made a dream come true racing on Indy-500 and now we’ll look for other dreams. I’m happy we got the flag with a good race considering the limitations of our team and I thank everyone who cheered for me” Says Leist.
